Défense des droits humains en Iran (en anglais)
I am upset to learn of the recent declaration of the Iranian interior ministry that the Center for the Defense of Human Rights (CDHR), co-founded by Nobel peace laureate Dr. Shirin Ebadi, is an illegal organization and violators will be prosecuted, as it had not obtained a proper permit. This technicality must not be used to close down the vital work of Shirin Ebadi for human rights and womens rights. It is my understanding that the center did apply for a permit, and despite repeated attempts, the government never responded to its application.
Iran has an obligation to protect human rights defenders under the 1998 U.N. Declaration on Human Rights Defenders. As a party to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Iran has pledged to respect human rights.
We are asking Iran to declare the CDHR legal and allow it to carry out its activities, free from intimidation and prosecution, according to Iranian and international law. The work of Shirin Ebadi has been honored globally and deserves the support and respect of all people. We are also asking the United Nations to review this case to ensure the vital work of the CDHR and Shirin Ebadi continues.
